Ultimately this will allow full-immersion virtual reality that feeds simulated sensory data directly into our brains.” The 2024 language quietly pushes the 2030 nanobot target to “next couple of decades” — a five-to-ten-year slip.

The hardware supports the slip. Apple’s Vision Pro, refreshed October 2025 with the M5 chip, still ships without haptic feedback. What Kurzweil missed (and what he nailed)

The pattern is sharper than in most batches. Where Kurzweil required new hardware to make a prediction come true, he is behind: nanobots, BCI-delivered VR, brain porting, direct knowledge download. Where the prediction could be satisfied by pure software running in the cloud on commodity GPUs, he is on time or early: millions of AI companions, proactive agents, routine-work automation, emergent NPC behavior.

That is a systematic bias. His 2005 models assumed deep brain integration was on the same exponential as computing. It was not — neuroscience, neurosurgery, and biomedical regulation do not double every 18 months. He also underestimated how much “feels real” work humans would do for free when handed a good-enough language model in a text window.

The next ten years of this batch will keep resolving asymmetrically. Cloud-compute predictions will arrive early. Silicon-in-the-skull predictions will arrive late, and when they do they will land first in tightly bounded clinical populations. The artificial people showed up. The nanobots are still in the lab.
