Where we actually are
Start with the five attributes nobody argues about. Complexity, knowledge, intelligence, creativity, beauty — these are now assembly-line outputs.
Knowledge and complexity are accelerating in the literature itself. Papers on machine creativity roughly quadrupled over the past decade, from about 2,200 a year in 2015 to 8,349 in 2025, with the sharp inflection landing in 2024 as generative models went mainstream. Work on affective computing — the engineering of emotion-aware machines — climbed from roughly 11,000 papers a year to more than 37,000 over the same window. The knowledge base is not just growing; its rate of growth is growing, which is precisely the shape Kurzweil insisted evolution always takes.
Creativity and beauty have moved from research into the patent office. Filings on generative models that produce images, text, art, or music rose from 856 in 2015 to 3,758 in 2025 — better than fourfold, and still steepening. What Kurzweil missed (and what he nailed)
Kurzweil’s forecast was that evolution would ascend toward these qualities — that the universe, through us, would grow more loving as it grew more intelligent, the way a curve approaches its asymptote. What the evidence shows is the opposite vector. We are not rising toward the attributes of God. We are extracting them, one at a time, and packaging them for sale. Complexity became a research metric. Creativity became a patent class. Empathy became a score two chatbots trade between themselves. Love became a subscription with more than half a billion downloads.
And the packaging has a defect Kurzweil’s optimism could not see. A second study — from Aalto University, tracking nearly 2,000 Replika users across a year of their public posts — found that the same companions that relieve loneliness in the moment deepen it over time. Heavy users’ posts filled with “more signals of loneliness, depression and even suicidal thoughts” than a control group’s.
